Interior design is a term that has a lot of contexts. It is the blend of art and science which has a set of principles to deliver a perfect home for all those who occupy that space with high degrees of functionality and aestheticism. The profession of an interior designer is to manage, plan, coordinate, research, and organize the living spaces.

Interior design is an umbrella term and it encapsulated various disciplines like conceptual development, space planning, site inspection, programming and research, design execution, and construction management.

A brief history

In prehistoric times, interior design was clubbed with the entire building process and was not given an independent stance. The pursuit of interior design has been a part of civilization. The doubts on how to effectively use the available space, well being of the client and sufficient functionality were soundly clarified by this discipline. It is not similar to interior decorator, as we may think.

In ancient India, the medieval architects themselves used to design the places too. In earlier days too, arts and paintings from renowned artists used to adorn the walls.

Interior designs leap into commercial space

Industrial cities witnessed a rapid growth of middle-class families, who wanted classic homes with stellar designs that boldly spoke of their prosperity and status. Thus, there was a shift from large furniture owners to the sector of interior design. This particular business model shone in its innovative thinking and later professional interior design emerged in the mid 20th century.

The complete transition

Though interior design flourished in all areas, it was dominated by men, and women being the homemakers had no big say in it. But radical changes came into being and women also actively participated in this profession to bring about stellar designs and beautiful homes.
